Region: Vinho Verde DOC, Lima Sub-Region, Portugal

Grapes: 100% Vinhão

Alcohol ABV: 11.5%

Tasting Profile and Key Notes

Aroma:
A vibrant and expressive nose showing fresh blackberry, blueberry, sour cherry, and dark plum, layered with herbal notes of bay leaf, wild herbs, and subtle peppery spice. A distinctive mineral character and earthy undertone reflect the granite soils and Atlantic influence of the Lima Valley.

Palate:
Light to medium-bodied yet intensely flavoured, with juicy dark berries, tart cherry, and a refreshing natural acidity. Firm but smooth tannins provide structure, balanced by a bright, energetic freshness and a slightly savoury finish. The wine has the classic Vinhão character — deeply coloured, vibrant, and highly gastronomic while remaining elegant and easy to drink.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, undergoing traditional skin maceration in granite tanks at controlled temperatures around 20–22°C. After pressing, the wine completes malolactic fermentation and rests on fine lees before bottling. Made with minimal intervention, the wine is lightly filtered with low sulphur addition to preserve freshness while maintaining stability.

Farming

The Vinhão grapes come from biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Lima sub-region of Vinho Verde, where vines are planted on granite-rich soils under a cool Atlantic climate. Aphros, led by winemaker Vasco Croft, focuses on regenerative vineyard practices and biodiversity, allowing the native Vinhão variety to express its natural acidity, mineral character, and unique regional identity.
