Tasting Profile and Key Notes

Aroma:
A sophisticated and expressive Côtes-du-Rhône with aromas of ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, red cherry, and black plum. Notes of violet, lavender, Provençal garrigue, thyme, and rosemary add a classic Southern Rhône character. Behind the fruit, subtle hints of pepper, liquorice, leather, and earth bring complexity.

Palate:
Medium to full-bodied with impressive depth for a Côtes-du-Rhône. The palate shows flavours of red berries, black cherry, plum, and spice, supported by silky tannins and refreshing acidity. The Grenache provides richness and sweet fruit, while Syrah and Mourvèdre contribute structure, savoury notes, and a peppery finish. Despite its concentration, the wine remains elegant, fresh, and balanced.

Winemaking

The grapes come from old vines planted around the Clavin lieu-dit, near the northern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, followed by ageing for approximately one year in traditional large oak foudres, preserving freshness and allowing the wine to develop complexity without heavy oak influence. The wine is bottled with minimal intervention.

Farming

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne farms organically, with vineyards located on the slopes of Clavin, where soils are composed mainly of Miocene sands (safres), red clay, limestone, and gravel. The estate works with old vines (average age around 85 years) and focuses on biodiversity and natural vineyard balance. The cooler northern exposure of the site helps maintain freshness and elegance in the warm Southern Rhône climate.
