Schloss Johannisberg 50° Riesling Feinherb 2023
Type: White Wine (Off-Dry / Riesling / Classic Rheingau Style)
Region: Rheingau, Germany (Schloss Johannisberg single vineyard)
Grapes: 100% Riesling
Alcohol ABV: 11.5%
Tasting Profile and Key Notes
Aroma:
A beautifully expressive Rheingau Riesling with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, pear, and green apple. Bright citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit are layered with hints of white flowers, fresh herbs, and subtle mineral tones. The aromatic profile balances ripe fruit sweetness with the classic freshness and precision of Riesling.
Palate:
Off-dry, vibrant, and elegant with a perfect balance between fruit sweetness and refreshing acidity. Flavours of peach, lime, green apple, and citrus are complemented by a fine mineral backbone, creating a wine that feels juicy yet precise. The finish is clean, lively, and slightly saline with excellent length. The Feinherb style offers more roundness and generosity compared with a dry Riesling while maintaining the signature Rheingau tension.
Winemaking
The grapes are hand-harvested from the historic Schloss Johannisberg vineyard and gently pressed to preserve purity and freshness. Fermentation is carried out mainly in stainless steel tanks with careful temperature control to retain Riesling’s aromatic character. Ageing on fine lees adds subtle texture and complexity while maintaining the wine’s elegant, mineral-driven style.
Farming
Schloss Johannisberg is one of Germany’s most historic Riesling estates, located on south-facing terraces overlooking the Rhine River. The vineyard soils are dominated by Taunus quartzite, loam, and loess, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s distinctive mineral character. The warm exposure allows ripe fruit development, while the Rhine’s moderating influence helps preserve acidity and freshness.
